Date To Recipient, Huntley Centennial Public School in the village of Carp is facing an urgent accommodation issue. This requires the attention of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, the Ministry of Education, as well as the Province of Ontario. The latest figures show that Huntley is functioning at over 135% capacity. There are 555 students in a school designed for 360. Huntley Centennial Public School was built in 1967. In the past 35 years, there have not been any significant upgrades. One third of our student population is housed in nine portables on a site designed for less. Next year, with the cap of 20 students per classroom up to Grade 3, Huntley will need four more portables. The school facilities such as bathrooms, the gym, the library and storage spaces were designed for a much smaller student population. There are also no specialty rooms such as a science lab or home economics space. These are but a few of the concerns which I would like the Ottawa Carleton District School Board to address. I write to you as a parent who is concerned for the health, safety and well-being of the children of Huntley Centennial. I ask the Board to ensure that our children are given the same benefits and opportunities available to other students within the city of Ottawa.
